Cyndi and Dave had a visit from some cute African Black-footed penguins.

The Florida Aquarium is proud to announce the addition of two additional African Black-footed Penguins to the growing number of penguins in our mini-colony. There are now a total of 8 penguins alternating appearances daily during the Penguin Promenade. There names describe their habitat along the South African coast:

Sunny, Sandy, Pebbles, Rocky, Cliff, Shelly, Windy and Reef

The African Black-footed penguin lives in colonies on 24 islands between Namibia and Port Elizabeth, Africa. They are monogamous, often paring up year after year, and have been known to stay with the same mate for as many as 10 years. Their diet consists of sardines, anchovies, squid and herrings. The incubation period lasts about 40 days with the male and female taking equal turns keeping the egg warm. The length of each of these shifts last about two and a half days.

Penguins have shiny, waterproof feathers that help keep their skin dry. Their feathers are extremely dense, with about 70 feathers per square inch.
