"Project Runway's" Tim Gunn, who stars opposite supermodel Heidi Klum and has become a household name as the mentor to all of the designers on the hugely popular "Bravo" reality series, is bringing his passion for helping people look and feel their most confident to the Addressing Psoriasis campaign. While Tim doesn't have psoriasis, he recently became aware that many psoriasis patients limit their clothing selections to cover their disease, so Gunn is now announcing a contest for people with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis to enter for a chance to win a walk on the runway in the Addressing Psoriasis Fashion Show and help raise public awareness about this condition.
Almost seven million Americans suffer from psoriasis, a chronic disease of the immune system that causes the skin cells to grow at an accelerated rate; and approximately 80-percent of these patients suffer from plaque psoriasis which causes painful and itchy red, scaly patches and can create feelings of self-consciousness and inhibit peoples' clothing choices. In fact, a National Psoriasis Foundation survey revealed that 63-percent of people expressed significant feelings of self-consciousness, 57-percent of them indicated that their psoriasis harms their self-esteem, and 40-percent of them reported choosing their clothing to conceal their psoriasis.
Joining Tim was Dr. Susan C. Taylor, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University, who is encouraging people with plaque psoriasis to visit a dermatologist to begin managing their condition. Dr. Taylor can also explain how psoriasis can affect other aspects of a person's health and how managing it can improve self-esteem.
