We turn our clocks ahead for Daylight Saving Time, we'll get an extra hour of sunlight and more opportunities to catch some rays to make our own vitamin D. But the sun can't be counted on to supply all the vitamin D we need, especially in the winter or if you wear sunscreen. That's part of the reason experts say many Americans are D-ficient in this vital nutrient.
There have never been more reasons to get your D. Emerging science suggests vitamin D may help protect against heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancers. Some studies even indicate that vitamin D may help strengthen our defenses – warding off the flu and other illnesses. There are even preliminary studies that suggest vitamin D is linked to longevity.
Because of the widespread vitamin D deficiency problem in this country, March 9th is being declared Vitamin D Day, just in time for Daylight Saving Time when we're all thinking about sunshine. Registered dietitian and TV cooking show host, Ellie Krieger, tells us why vitamin D is so important for our health and offer tips for getting the required amounts of this essential nutrient in our diet.
