Singer, songwriter and patient advocate Naomi Judd is speaking up for those struggling with pain, an often devastating condition that affects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Even though it affects an estimated 75 million people and is considered a serious public health issue, pain is still overlooked or misunderstood by patients and healthcare professionals alike.
Judd – a former nurse – understands how destructive pain can be. She's also seen how it has impacted those close to her – most recently, a dear friend with excruciating pain caused by pancreatic cancer. That's why Judd is lending her voice to the national education program Partners Against Pain® to raise awareness about the urgent need to address untreated and undertreated pain in America. Judd hopes that her involvement will help to change the way pain is perceived, and inspire those in pain to stay determined to get relief: "Pain can and should be treated – no one should suffer in silence."
More than a quarter of the American population – one in four people – cope with persistent pain. The annual cost of pain to the United States – including health care expenses, lost income, and lost productivity – is estimated to be $100 billion. Several leading pain advocacy organizations are championing legislation currently before Congress to help improve pain care for individuals and their families.
