Cirque du Soleil, renowned worldwide for dazzling productions featuring artistic entertainment and acrobatic feats, tours Florida this summer with one of its signature shows, Saltimbanco.
Saltimbanco, performed for the first time ever in Florida, remains as relevant and powerful today as it was when it first debuted in 1992. By moving the production from Cirque du Soleil's trademark Grand Chapiteau "Big Top" and reconfiguring it to fit into existing arenas, the show moves more easily from market-to-market. This gives more people than even the opportunity to enjoy a Cirque du Soleil show in their own city.
From the Italian "saltare in banco," which means "to jump on a bench," Saltimbanco explores the urban experience. The high intensity acrobatic spectacle takes place in an imaginary city where diversity is cause for hope. The set reflects the contradictions of a city, where the powerful and dispossessed live side-by-side. This is a city inhabited by eclectic, eccentric populations; a place where anything is possible.
Like all other Cirque du Soleil shows, Saltimbanco borrows from theater, dance and music, features spectacular costumes, lighting and make-up and creates an experience that both amuses and amazes. The current cast of 49 artists, 15 of whom were part of the show's original big top tour, hails from Canada and 20 other countries. Full of color, amusement and amazement, Saltimbanco is a fun show for the whole family to enjoy, a great outing for everyone!
Carmen Ruest began her career with Cirque du Soleil as a street performer towering above others while balancing on stilts. She has continued with Cirque du Soleil performing on stage, as a talent scout and as a director. As director of creation for the North America tour of Saltimbanco, she oversees a cast of 50 artists from 20 countries, 15 of whom were part of the show's original "big top" tour.
In addition to her work as a stiltwalking coach on Alegría (Touring Show) and Mystère (Permanent show in Las Vegas, NV), she was the creative and artistic coordinator on La Nouba (Permanent show in Orlando, FL) and became later the assistant to the casting director. In 2005 she accepted the new challenges of becoming the director of creation for DELIRIUM (A Cirque du Soleil live music event touring in arenas).
Since 2006, Carmen took on the position of director of creation for Saltimbanco (North American arena tour).
