Before Halloween:
Costumes
- Construct or purchase a costume in advance so you are fully prepared- Kmart
- Select a costume with large eye holes or opt to use hypoallergenic make-up instead of a mask
- Make sure that costumes are short enough to avoid tripping, entanglement or contact with flame
Lighting
- Obtain fresh batteries and flashlight for all children and their escorts
- Consider adding reflective tape to all costumes for better visibility in the dark
- Discuss all safety procedures with everyone involved
On Halloween:
Decorating
- When carving a pumpkin get the kids involved, but leave the carving to the adults
- Choose flame resistant decorations
- Place Lanterns an hot electric lamps away from flammable materials
Meals and Snacks
- A good meal or healthy snack prior to trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from diving into their treats before inspection – Tiger's Milk Protein Bar
- Go over all the rules of the evening: candy, transportation, and ER procedures
After Trick-Or-Treating:
- Adults must thoroughly inspect all treats
- To avoid the "right before bed" sugar rush keep the treats to a minimum
- Everyone must brush their teeth to get rid of the sugar the treats have left behind…this is a good way to institute lifetime health practices- Listerine for kids
